Key Points

  • An emergency room doctor warned drivers and passengers against wearing claw clips inside vehicles.
  • High-impact crashes can drive the hard clips beneath the scalp, requiring surgery to remove them.
  • Metal clips carry a greater risk and have caused skull fractures and brain bleeds in crash victims.

Surrey (Cambridge Tribune) October 15, 2026 – As reported by Paige Freshwater of the Daily Mirror, Dr Joe, an emergency medicine practitioner who shares healthcare advice on social media, highlighted that wearing popular claw-style hair clips while driving or travelling as a passenger can lead to severe head trauma during motor vehicle collisions.

“A little friendly neighbourhood PSA for women out there. Do you like to wear these? These claw-style hair clips? I’ve pulled several of these out of women’s heads after car accidents. These little plastic things can be a real pain in the butt to get out from underneath the scalp once they’re embedded.”

— Dr Joe, Emergency Room Doctor

As detailed by James Rodger of Birmingham Live, the mechanism of injury occurs when the force of an impact drives the rigid structure of the clip into the back of the head against the headrest.

When a collision occurs, the occupant’s head is forced backwards against the seat rest with significant force, causing hard plastic or metal prongs to puncture the soft tissue of the scalp.

As reported by Luke Matthews of Surrey Live, Dr Joe explained that while plastic clips present significant removal challenges for medical staff, metal variants present far more dangerous anatomical complications.

“Worse yet are the metal ones. I actually saw a patient once who had a metal hair clip in her head during a car accident. And afterwards, she had a skull fracture and a brain bleed.”

— Dr Joe, Emergency Room Doctor

As noted by Express Motoring reporter Aaron O’Neill, medical professionals strongly encourage vehicle occupants to choose safer styling options before embarking on road journeys.

The medical advice recommends opting for soft fabric hair ties or scrunchies that lie flat against the cranium to avoid pressure points upon impact.

Medical staff emphasize that removing rigid accessories before driving takes minimal effort but prevents traumatic scalp lacerations and underlying bone structural damage.

What Are the Medical Risks of Wearing Claw Clips While Driving?

The fundamental structural hazard of a claw clip stems from its protruding design and rigid construction materials.

In a collision, seatbelts and head restraints are designed to absorb motion, but a rigid accessory placed between the skull and the headrest focuses concentrated kinetic force directly onto a small surface area of the cranium.

This concentrated pressure point easily pierces skin and subgaleal tissues, forcing foreign objects deep beneath the scalp line.

Extricating embedded prongs frequently requires surgical intervention and localized debridement in emergency departments to prevent secondary infection or long-term nerve damage.

When constructed from metal, the structural rigidity increases, dramatically elevating the likelihood of fracturing cranial bones and causing intracranial hemorrhages.

How Can Drivers and Passengers Stay Safe on the Road?

Safety experts and emergency personnel recommend adopting simple habits prior to setting off on journeys in any motor vehicle.

Vehicle occupants should routinely check their hairstyles to ensure no hard plastic or metal items rest against the rear portion of the skull.

If long hair needs to be secured, elastic bands, soft scrunchies, or low braids offer secure alternatives that sit flat against the headrest.

Keeping hair accessories stored in the glove compartment allows individuals to quickly re-style their hair upon reaching their destination safely.

Background of Claw Clip Vehicle Safety Concerns

Claw clips experienced a massive resurgence in global fashion popularity over recent years due to their convenience and ease of use.

However, emergency department personnel have continuously raised concerns regarding the unintended safety hazards associated with rigid accessories in high-speed environments.

Prior medical case reports from international emergency centers have documented severe scalp lacerations, embedded foreign bodies, and localized skull fractures linked directly to claw clips during vehicular impacts.

Headrests in modern automobiles are engineered to cushion the head and prevent whiplash; the presence of an unyielding plastic or metallic object negates these safety mechanisms by creating a localized puncture hazard upon impact.

Prediction: How This Development Can Affect Female Drivers and Passengers

This medical warning is expected to lead to heightened consumer awareness and potential shifts in driving habits among female motorists and passengers who regularly use claw clips.

As awareness spreads across social platforms and automotive safety forums, more individuals are likely to adopt pre-drive safety routines, such as unclipping hair accessories before securing seatbelts.

Furthermore, this development may influence product safety labeling or prompt hair accessory manufacturers to introduce softer, flexible, or crash-safe alternatives designed specifically for daily travel convenience.

Over time, increased education on subtle cabin safety hazards could reduce preventable emergency room visits related to non-collision-related secondary trauma.
