What Triggered the Recent Wave of Vandalism Against Cambridge Taxis?

The vandalism surge began intensifying around 10 March 2026, as reported by multiple drivers to local authorities. In the first confirmed incident, a hackney carriage operated by veteran driver Mohammed Iqbal was found with all four tyres slashed outside his Arbury home. “I returned from a night shift to find my cab ruined – this isn’t random, it’s targeted,” Iqbal told PHTM News journalist Sarah Jenkins on 20 March.

As reported by (Sarah Jenkins) of (PHTM News), Iqbal added: “We’ve seen Uber and private hires undercut us for years, and now this. Who’s next?”

Subsequent attacks followed a pattern. On 12 March, two vehicles parked near Cambridge Railway Station suffered smashed windscreens. Driver Aisha Khan, speaking to Cambridge Independent reporter Tom Pilgrim, described hearing glass shatter at 2am. “My dashcam caught shadows on bikes – young lads, laughing as they ran off,” Khan said. Pilgrim’s 22 March article detailed how Khan’s footage was handed to police.

By 18 March, the tally reached eight cases, with keying incidents in Newnham and slashing in Chesterton. Cambridge Live journalist Elena Rossi covered a cluster near the city centre on 19 March, quoting driver Raj Patel: “My windscreen cost £800 to fix. We’re sitting ducks without more patrols.”

Who Are the Suspected Perpetrators and What’s the Motive?

Police have yet to name suspects, but eyewitness accounts point to groups of teenagers on bicycles. As detailed by (Tom Pilgrim) of (Cambridge Independent) in his 23 March dispatch, Detective Inspector Laura Hayes stated: “We’re reviewing CCTV and dashcam evidence. These appear opportunistic but may link to anti-taxi sentiment.”

Drivers suspect links to rivalry with ride-hailing firms. Cambridge Taxi Association chair David Brooks, interviewed by (Sarah Jenkins) of (PHTM News), claimed: “Private hire drivers have been vocal against us at council meetings. This feels like retaliation amid the licensing row.”

Brooks referenced a January 2026 council debate on wheel clamp reforms, where hackney licences were criticised as outdated. No direct evidence ties apps to vandalism, but tensions simmer. As reported by (Elena Rossi) of (Cambridge Live), one anonymous private hire driver dismissed involvement: “We compete fairly; this hurts everyone.”

Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed 12 reports by 24 March, per their official statement. Superintendent Mark Thompson said: “We treat this seriously and have boosted patrols in hotspot areas.”

How Are Cambridge Cabbies Responding to the Attacks?

The trade is uniting in defiance. On 24 March, 20 drivers rallied outside the Guildhall, as covered by (Tom Pilgrim) of (Cambridge Independent). Association vice-chair Fatima Ali declared: “Enough is enough. We’ll strike if needed – passengers deserve safe rides.”

Many are installing extra cameras. Driver Omar Hassan, quoted by (Sarah Jenkins) of (PHTM News), invested £300 in 360-degree units post-attack. “Fear’s changed everything; I skip late jobs now,” he said.

The association demands 24/7 patrols and a dedicated taxi safety fund. Brooks told PHTM: “Council talks tough but acts slow. Our members’ mental health is suffering.”

What Has Cambridge City Council Said About Taxi Vandalism?

Council leader Councillor Nicola Day responded on 24 March via a statement to Cambridge Live. “We condemn these acts and support police efforts. A safety review launches next week,” she said, as reported by (Elena Rossi).

Critics call it inadequate. As noted by (Tom Pilgrim) of (Cambridge Independent), opposition councillor Lewis Herbert questioned: “Why wait? Drivers need action now, not reviews.”

The council points to existing measures, like taxi rank CCTV, but admits gaps in suburbs. A cross-party working group meets 30 March to discuss.

Which Areas in Cambridge Are Most Affected by Taxi Vandalism?

Hotspots cluster around transport hubs and residential zones. Cambridge Railway Station saw three incidents, per police logs cited by (Sarah Jenkins) of (PHTM News). City centre ranks and the station forecourt feature prominently.

Chesterton Road reported two slashings, while Newnham and Arbury each had one, as detailed in (Elena Rossi)’s Cambridge Live timeline. “Suburbs feel forgotten,” driver Patel told Rossi.

What Safety Measures Are Police Implementing for Cambridge Taxis?

Cambridgeshire Police have surged visible patrols, per Superintendent Thompson’s 24 March briefing to (Tom Pilgrim). “We’re targeting evenings and using unmarked cars for deterrence,” he said.

Drivers are advised to park in lit areas and share footage via a dedicated portal. “Community intel is key,” added DI Hayes.

No arrests by press time, but two youths were questioned over a separate incident, per PHTM updates.

Will This Vandalism Escalate into Broader Protests by Cambridge Drivers?

Association chair Brooks hints at escalation. In his (Sarah Jenkins) interview, he warned: “If ignored, we’ll park up city-wide. Safety first.”

Pilgrim’s Cambridge Independent piece notes similar 2024 unrest in Oxford, where strikes followed vandalism. Cambridge officials urge dialogue to avert chaos.

How Does This Fit into National Trends for Taxi Attacks?

The incidents echo UK-wide issues. A 2025 Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Research Group report logged 450 vandalism cases nationally, up 20%. As referenced by (Elena Rossi) of (Cambridge Live), London saw 50 in Q1 2026 alone.

Experts link it to app competition. Transport commentator Dr. Emily Carter, quoted in PHTM, said: “Legacy taxis feel squeezed; vandalism is a symptom.”

What Long-Term Solutions Are Proposed for Cambridge Taxi Safety?

Proposals include mandatory tracking tech and insurance subsidies, per Brooks. Council review eyes these, plus youth outreach to curb vandalism.

Drivers like Khan push for unity: “Hackneys and privates must collaborate against crime.”
