Cambridgeshire (Cambridge Tribune) October 17, 2026 — A specialist unit within Cambridgeshire Constabulary has successfully recovered stolen assets valued at nearly £700,000 during a six-month targeted operation aimed at curbing organised rural criminality across the region.

Between April and September, the force’s Rural Crime Action Team (RCAT) tracked down and secured 48 separate items of stolen property. The recovered assets include agricultural plant machinery, pick-up trucks, domestic vehicles, trailers, quad bikes, and caravans.

As reported by Sarah Cliss of The Hunts Post, official data released by Cambridgeshire Constabulary shows the total value of recovered assets reached £699,000 over the six-month timeframe.

During the same operational window, RCAT officers executed 26 arrests, conducted 12 vehicle pursuits, and logged 107 driving offences across local road networks.

The enforcement campaign also led to the seizure of 39 uninsured vehicles and the detection of 12 separate drug possession offences within the county.

“Many people know RCAT as the force’s hare coursing team, but that is only one aspect of what we do,” stated Sergeant Tom Nuttall, leader of the Rural Crime Action Team, as quoted by Sarah Cliss of The Hunts Post.

“Our focus remains on tackling organised crime groups that target rural communities, recovering stolen machinery, and pursuing offenders who cause significant harm to local livelihoods,” added Sergeant Tom Nuttall in statements highlighted by Johann Tasker of Farmers Weekly.

What items were recovered during the six-month operation?

The breakdown of property recovered by the team includes five items of heavy plant machinery with a combined valuation of £206,000.

Officers also retrieved 13 pick-up trucks valued collectively at nearly £217,000, along with 11 motor cars worth over £120,000.

Three caravans valued at more than £46,000 were secured alongside two quad bikes estimated to be worth £4,000.

As reported by FarmingUK, the recovery of high-value agricultural machinery directly prevents substantial financial disruption to local farming enterprises during critical harvest seasons.

How is the Rural Crime Action Team tackling organized crime?

The Rural Crime Action Team operates throughout Cambridgeshire to tackle cross-border organised crime syndicates that target isolated agricultural premises and commercial sites.

Officers utilise targeted patrols, intelligence gathering, and tracking technologies to locate stolen goods rapidly before they can be disassembled or exported out of the area.

In addition to direct physical enforcement, RCAT relies on community engagement channels such as eCops to broadcast local crime alerts and receive intelligence directly from residents.

Background of the rural crime enforcement initiative

Rural crime across Cambridgeshire and surrounding Eastern counties has historically posed significant operational challenges for local police forces due to vast geographical coverage and isolated farmsteads. Organised crime groups frequently target high-value machinery, quad bikes, and specialized transport equipment due to their resale value on illicit markets.

To combat this rising trend, Cambridgeshire Constabulary established the Rural Crime Action Team (RCAT) as a dedicated specialist unit.

While initially widely recognised for enforcing anti-hare coursing legislation and wildlife protection laws, the unit’s mandate has expanded over recent years to encompass intelligence-led interventions against plant machinery theft, vehicular crime, illegal drug distribution, and wider rural burglaries.

In previous operational years, similar enforcement measures by RCAT resulted in significant recoveries, including over £1 million in stolen machinery retrieved during the prior 12-month period.

The continued focus on multi-agency cooperation and cross-border intelligence sharing aims to dismantle the infrastructure of organised criminal networks operating within the East of England.

Prediction: How this development will affect local agricultural businesses and rural residents

The recovery of nearly £700,000 in stolen property and the arrest of 26 suspects will directly benefit farmers, agricultural landowners, and rural business operators across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

For local farmers, the rapid retrieval of high-value plant machinery and pick-up trucks reduces operational downtime and mitigates severe financial losses associated with delayed field operations.

Furthermore, sustained enforcement by RCAT is anticipated to stabilize rising commercial insurance premiums for agricultural equipment, which often escalate following spikes in unrecovered thefts.

For rural residents and smaller community stakeholders, the seizure of 39 uninsured vehicles and the interception of drug-related offences serve as a strong deterrent against opportunistic and organised crime in isolated villages.

Enhanced police visibility and active intelligence gathering through platform alerts like eCops are likely to foster stronger cooperation between residents and law enforcement, leading to increased crime reporting and higher recovery rates in future operational quarters.
