Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council are holding a series of public exhibitions across Greater Cambridge this September, giving residents, businesses, and organisations a final chance to review and comment on the Proposed Greater Cambridge Local Plan before it goes to independent examination.
Key Details of the Plan
The Proposed Submission Local Plan is a joint 20-year strategy setting out how Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire will manage growth up to 2045, including where new homes, jobs and supporting infrastructure will go, and policies covering climate change, biodiversity, wellbeing and sustainable transport.
The latest version reflects ongoing work to address infrastructure constraints the region has been grappling with, including water supply and housing pressures. It follows a first round of consultation held between December 2025 and January 2026, whose findings have been incorporated into this updated draft.
Under the plan, more than 50,000 new homes are required between 2024 and 2045. Around 37,000 of these are already accounted for through existing planning permissions and allocations in the current adopted Local Plan, leaving the remainder to be identified through this process.
Exhibition Schedule
Members of the Greater Cambridge Shared Planning team will be at each event to explain the proposals, answer questions, and help attendees understand how to submit formal representations. No registration is required, though signing up in advance is encouraged to help organisers plan for numbers.

The consultation is assessing whether the plan is “sound” under national planning rules, meaning whether it has been positively prepared, is backed by evidence, is effective, and aligns with national planning policy.
Council Response
Cllr Henry Batchelor, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Lead Cabinet Member for Planning, called the exhibitions
“the final opportunity for people to comment on the Greater Cambridge Local Plan before it is submitted for independent examination,”
adding that the events would let residents “ask questions directly to officers.”
Cllr Katie Thornburrow, Leader of uk/local/cambridge-city-council/">Cambridge City Council, said the plan sets out how the council intends to address the area’s “significant changes,” from housing need and economic growth to climate change and infrastructure, and urged residents to attend and “share their views on the Plan in this final consultation.”
